With AFC’s change in the calendar of the competitions, the winner of the next ISL season will play in the next ACL and AFC Cup in that same year. On the other hand, India has been slotted in Group D of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers alongside Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Cambodia. India will host all the matches from its group. Statement according to Footy Rankings: “There will be no AFC Champions League and AFC Cup spot for the ISL League Shield winners and ISL trophy winners this season.

AFC is going to change the timing of the competitions (AFC Champions League and AFC Cup). That means no AFC Competitions for league shield winners and trophy winners of the ISL 2021-22 season.

Instead, the league shield winners and trophy winners of 2022-23 season will play in the AFC Champions League/ AFC Cup starting in that same year.”

The host nation, India, are ranked highest among the other teams in the group. They rank 104 in the world according to the latest FIFA rankings. Whereas their opponents, Hong Kong ranks at 148, Afghanistan at 150, and Cambodia at 178 in the world.
