While Shikhar Dhawan was earlier touted as the new captain, Punjab Kings decided to turn to Mayank Agarwal.

“We will go with the player who has been with us and understands the setup and the coaching staff,” another Punjab Kings official said.

Mayank Agarwal fits the bill perfectly. The India Test opener knows head coach Anil Kumble for a long time as the spin legend also hails from Karnataka. Furthermore, he has been with Punjab Kings since joining the franchise in 2018. He was the only high-profile player retained by PBKS.
