Stoke’s Dwight Gayle is said to be receiving £40,000 of his £60,000 wages from the Magpies

All the players away from the club on a temporary basis were brought in by Newcastle’s previous owners before a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund took over last October.

Manager Eddie Howe made it clear that several of those players were no longer part of his plans, and the club moved quickly to shift the dead wood.

Gayle is one of the players that is still being paid by Newcastle, with the Stoke City man earning £60,000 per week, of which Newcastle are paying £40,000 of.

It’s believed Newcastle are paying almost all of Jeff Hendrick’s £50,000 per week wages while he is on loan at Reading, and £30,000 of Hayden’s £50,000 per week wages at Norwich City.

It is believed Newcastle took the decision to aid their financial fair play status and to try and push through the moves quickly.

They are said to have got caught up by previous owner Mike Ashley’s decision to hand out long contracts, particularly when the club was promoted in 2016.

Newcastle signed nine players in the summer transfer window for a combined £200million.
