- He decelerated his putter just before contact and the ball barely moved an inch
- The Spaniard said ‘I wish I could give you all the excuses in the world’ afterwards
- The bizarre mistake was the shortest missed putt of Rahm’s PGA Tour career
This is the moment that world no 1 golfer Jon Rahm makes himself look like someone who is completely new to the sport.
During the opening round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Thursday, the Spaniard faced a seemingly straightforward 10-inch putt for par on the par-3 seventh hole.
But incredibly, he decelerated his putter just before contact meaning that the ball moved barely an inch.
World no 1 Jon Rahm remarkably missed this 10-inch putt at the Arnold Palmer Invitational
It was the shortest missed putt of Rahm’s PGA Tour career and the shortest missed putt of the season by any player.
The reigning US Open champion would quickly tap in for a bogey en route to an even-par 72 that left him tied for 51st by the round’s end – seven strokes behind early leader Rory McIlroy.
Before Thursday, Rahm had tidied up all 211 of his putts inside three feet this season.
‘I wish I could give you all the excuses in the world,’ the 27-year-old said afterwards. ‘It just didn’t feel good in my hands, and I tried to stop, and I didn’t. I just simply didn’t stop. I don’t know. It was very odd.

The Spaniard won the first major tournament of his career when he lifted the US Open last year
‘I’ve seen many things. I’ve seen the putter get a little stuck on a blade of grass on the way back and do something funny, hit the ground before because you’re not paying attention.
‘I’ve seen so many things from a foot. I’ve seen some of the best putters in the world miss it because you don’t really take a proper stance.
‘It sucks to give away a shot like that, to be honest.’
