Cristian Romero, Emi Buendia, Emi Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso in WASTED trip to South America

Premier League quartet of Cristian Romero, Emi Buendia, Emi Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso in WASTED trip to South America – as appeal against suspension from Argentina duty is rejected by FIFA

  • All four players – attached to Premier League clubs – were called up by Argentina
  • That’s despite the stars being suspended for their country’s World Cup qualifiers
  • The quartet were banned for not following international match protocols regarding red-list countries after September’s abandoned game against Brazil
  • But having travelled to South America hoping their bans would be cut short, they will return home to Europe having not been available for selection

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is among four Premier League players who have had a wasted trip to South America in the hope of playing for Argentina.

The quartet – with Emi Buendia, Emi Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso also among the pack – were banned for two games for not following international match protocols regarding red-list countries amid the controversially abandoned World Cup qualifier against Brazil in September.

All four players were banned for two games but were nonetheless selected for international duty by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.

Their bans were appealed in the hope they’d be shortened to just one game – which was Friday’s Qatar World Cup qualifying victory against Venezuela.

But the appeal has been rejected by FIFA, meaning all four players have travelled to South America without being available for selection.

As such, the players have returned to Europe and Romero is expected to train at Tottenham’s Enfield HQ on Tuesday.

Buendia and Martinez will train with Aston Villa while Lo Celso – attached to Spurs – is currently on loan at Villarreal and will return to Spain.

The four players travelled to Sao Paolo to play Brazil, which was against Brazil’s Covid regulations at the time which barred UK arrivals.

Spurs could not stop him travelling but adds to the strain between club and country in this instance. Romero was out for nearly three months after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing for Argentina in November.
