Barcelona are eyeing a move for Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and could offer a swap deal involving Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Portugal international attracted an approach from Barca last summer before eventually choosing to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

The 27-year-old has not always been a regular feature for the Citizens since joining from Monaco in 2017 but this campaign he has chipped in with 11 goals and five assists.

The Catalan giants are interested in signing Silva and amid their ongoing financial struggles, the La Liga giants could offer midfielder de Jong back in return, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The deal could work out potentially for both parties with City boss Pep Guardiola being a huge admirer of de Jong and needing to shake things up after a heartbreaking Champions League semi-final exit to Real Madrid.

The Spaniard wanted to sign de Jong from Ajax three years ago but the club were beaten to his signature by Barcelona.

The Citizens could be tempted, despite Silva becoming a vital player for them this campaign, or they could even just reignite that interest if Barca are forced to sell the 24-year-old because of their financial constraints.

Barcelona have even put a £58million price tag on de Jong with rivals Manchester United also extremely interested.

De Jong was close to a move to the Etihad Stadium in 2019 — members of his family had viewed properties in the North West — before eventually choosing the Catalan giants.

Club captain Fernandinho recently confirmed that he is set to leave in the summer, bringing an end to his illustrious nine-year stay, and leaving a big hole in City’s midfield.
